The 50th Anniversary was an
historic opportunity to encourage international debate about the role of the
UN, as well as to celebrate its accomplishments. Coinciding with a turning
point in international relations, it was a time to rekindle the ideals of the
UN Charter and to spread the spirit of cooperation among the peoples of the
world. An overall theme of the celebration, "We The Peoples of the United
Nations... United for a Better World," was endorsed by the General
Assembly in October 1993.

was carried into outer space by the astronauts of the Space Shuttle Atlantis,
to salute United Nations work for the peaceful uses of outer space.
