Human Rights Day

The General Assembly adopted a resolution on 4 December 1950 (Res. 423) to observe each year on 10 December Human Rights Day to celebrate the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10 December 1948 and to exert increasing efforts in this field of human progress.

It was stated that the celebration of this event in all countries was a common effort to bring the Declaration to the attention of the peoples of the world. The events are coordinated by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva.

In a lot of countries special conferences are organized. Also demonstrations take place and petitions are presented. In the Netherlands local Amnesty International groups take to the streets to gather signatures for the release of political prisoners.

The last few years an international theme has been chosen for Human Rights Day.
