As a result of the Yalta Conference, France was given its own occupation zone in Germany. On 30 August 1946 the state of Rhineland-Palatinate was formed out of the Bavarian or Rhenish Palatinate, the areas Koblenz and Trier from the Prussian Rhine Province, the province of Rheinhessen, part of the province of Hesse-Nassau and the district of Birkenfeld from Oldenburg. It was the last state in the Western Occupation Zones to be formed.

On 18 May 1947 the state adopted a constitution and in 1949 became a Land of the Federal Republic of Germany.
